Flock It (Flocking to simulate interior carpet in scale) - by Peter peter@escalemodels.com

Replicating the look and feel of carpet in 1:24 scale was a bit of a mystery when I first got back into the hobby. I then remembered a friend of mine growing up used flocking to simulate grass for his train set. I then wondered whether or not flocking existed in different colours. Well the answer is a resounding yes, and the colour range is pretty vast. This article is how I prefer to apply flocking to simulate carpets in scale automobiles.

Tools and Products Required

The following tools and products are required to simulate flocking.

  • Flocking

  • Spray Adhesive

  • Masking Tape

  • Sharp Knife

  • Tea Strainer

Surface Preparation

Firstly, begin by applying the base colour to your interior. In the case of this Lamborghini, the colour I chose is Humbrol Matt Cream. Note:- I didn't bother filling in the sink marks as the flocking will cover this and you will never notice it was there. Once the paint is dry, mask the area that will not receive flocking.

Spraying Adhesive

Spray the adhesive to the masked tub following the can instructions for safety and application usage. I use two different cutting boards (the green matt you can see in the pictures). I use one solely to spray on (wet), and the other purely for flocking (dry). Don't mix and match or you will have a complete mess on your hands.

Doing the shake

Once you have sprayed the adhesive to the tub, move it over to your dry matt. Place the flocking into the tea strainer and prepare gently shake it over the tub.

Tip: - Do this away from your normal work bench, wear a dust mask as the flocking material is very fine and can cause a health hazard. I prefer to do it outside on a non windy day.

Pressing down

Leave the flocking for a couple of minutes, then gently press the flocking to the tub to ensure proper adhesion.

Finishing

Once you have pressed the flocking down, leave it for another 5 minutes then gently tap the excess flocking back into its bag.

Progress to remove the masking tape to reveal the completed flocking.

The Finished Product

Overall, I think flocking is a quick and easy way to replicate interior carpet and it adds to the authenticity of that replica we strive to build.
